Hygrophorus monticola Smith & Hesler Cap 2-5cm across, broadly convex becoming flat or depressed, with an inturned margin that becomes irregular in mature specimens; yellowy fawn with a darker, more orange-buff disc and paler toward the margin; sticky but soon dry. Gills decurrent, distant, broad, many forked halfway to margin; whitish, becoming flushed with cap color, only paler. Stem 30-60 X 3-25mm, slightly thicker at top than base; white, though a few older specimens flushed with cap color. Flesh thick, firm, whitish. Odor cherry pits. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid, nonamyloid, 10-14 x 5.2-7.5ì. Deposit white. Habitat gregarious on soil and moss in coniferous woods. Occasional. Found in the northeastern United States, Idaho, and Canada.
